SAN DIEGO – The Artesian Ranch Substation Expansion project in Rancho Bernardo recently received two awards for its significant contribution to the local community.

The project was recognized by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) San Diego Chapter, receiving the prestigious "Outstanding Energy Project" award. This accolade showcases the Artesian project as an example of the long-lasting, positive impacts that energy initiatives can have on the San Diego community.

On June 16, ASCE presented the award to San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), as well as to the teams from Beta Engineering and NV5 that oversaw the project. Artesian also received an Honor Award in the Utilities category from the San Diego American Public Works Association on May 11.

This project is owned by SDG&E, which provides power to San Diego and Orange County. Beta Engineering oversaw the engineering, procurement and construction of the project, while NV5 was the engineer of record. Construction began in May 2020, and the project was fully energized in December 2022.

What prompted the Artesian Substation expansion?

The decision to expand the Artesian Substation was driven by the rapid commercial and residential growth in the Rancho Bernardo community, fueling the need for a more robust local grid.

To meet these power demands, SDG&E expanded the existing Artesian Substation and upgraded it from a 69/12kV substation to a 230/69/12kV substation.

This upgrade increases the substation’s capacity and flexibility by opening new pathways on the transmission grid, supporting the growing use of renewable power sources.

Additionally, it incorporates enhanced safety features (e.g., fire-resistant poles for overhead power lines), ensuring a safer more reliable power supply for the community.

What was unusual about this project?

The Artesian expansion presented many complexities as it had to be constructed while the existing 69/12kV substation remained operational, allotting for only brief outages at a time.

This required meticulous planning of phased construction and scheduling that would allow the new 69/12kV portion of the project to be built adjacent to the original.

Finally, the old 69/12kV portion of the site would be demolished and an entirely new 230/69kV project built in its place.
