On Nov. 5, the Beta Engineering team in San Diego gathered for the culmination of more than three months of fundraising efforts across the nation. The cause that brought them together was The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s annual Light The Night walk, which Beta’s San Diego team has sponsored and participated in for more than a decade. What made this year different, though, was how Beta came together as a team across all its locations to raise more than $19,000 as of Nov. 15 with the support of business partners, family and friends, and the Crest Industries family of companies.
“This is a personal cause for me and many of our team members who have loved ones affected by leukemia or lymphoma,” said Marketing Specialist Charlotte Tubbs. “Their courage inspired us and reminded us of the need for research to develop better treatments and a cure to end blood cancers.”
Over the course of Beta’s fundraising campaign, we hosted several initiatives, from a 50-state challenge with our sales representative firms to a cook-off people’s choice award donation. The biggest event, though, was the Throw for a Cure tournament in October, where Beta hosted a gumbo lunch, cornhole tournament, bake sale, and silent auction at its main office in Pineville, LA, for the Crest companies in central Louisiana. The event raised over $2,000.
“It was heartwarming to see our Beta and Crest teams come together to support this great cause,” said Marketing Coordinator Anne Mertens. “We had an incredible turnout, and family and friends were volunteering to contribute items for the bake sale or adding personal donations in addition to the lunch and tournament contributions.”
This year, Beta’s Executive Vice President George Brashear participated in San Diego’s Light The Night for the first time as an Executive Challenger. He actively reached out to partners in the industry during the three-month-long fundraising campaign, encouraging them to donate to the cause. Brashear’s personal page raised more than $12,000.
“There are people we run into every single day here in our work and personal life that’s affected by blood cancer. It seems like there’s no family that hasn’t been affected in some way or another,” said Brashear. “We need to do everything that we can to eliminate this from our society.”
According to LLS as of 2021, more than 1.5 million people in the U.S. are living with or in remission from blood cancers, and approximately every nine minutes, someone dies from a blood cancer. LLS has supported lifesaving research since 1949 and helped advance 85% of the blood cancer treatments approved by the FDA since 2017.
Thanks to teams like Beta Engineering, the LLS’s Light The Night in San Diego exceeded its goal of $1.3 million—raising nearly $1.4 million to fuel cancer research and support for patients and their families.
