As classes resume this school year, Northwood High School’s computer science program is continuing to expand. Beta Engineering, DIS-TRAN Packaged Substations (DTPS) and DIS-TRAN Steel (DTS) partnered to donate $6,000 to this innovative high school program in central Louisiana so the school can purchase the equipment it needs to set up an Autodesk computer lab.

This lab will provide students with a dedicated space where they can gain hands-on experience with Autodesk 3D modeling programs and equipment. Earlier this summer, the school saw its first group of students complete their Autodesk Inventor certifications, which is a credential many engineering and manufacturing companies are now seeking in drafters and engineers.

Lea Ann Fisher, who teaches Northwood’s computer science classes and is heading up the new computer lab, is excited to see this program growing. She wants to help her students connect what they are learning in her classes to career opportunities. She said that the certifications and experience students are gaining from the computer science program will set them up for success upon graduation and prepare them to enter the workforce.

In addition to supporting the launch of the new computer lab, Beta, DTPS and DTS are partnering to send team members from their companies to speak to Northwood’s computer science classes about STEM and power delivery industry topics throughout the school year. The three businesses are also planning to provide opportunities for job shadowing and visits to their offices and manufacturing facilities. Students will see firsthand what they can accomplish with their newfound modeling skills and the impact they can have on the industry.
