High Voltage Expertise

Civil & Structural Engineering

Whether it’s challenging terrain, obstacles on the site, seismic design standards, or stormwater requirements, our team is ready to solve your problem. Our team has the technical knowledge to ensure the project meets your requirements and is up to code. Beta’s civil engineers have the experience and expertise to deliver complex projects while remaining flexible and adapting to the individual needs of each customer and each project. Our engineers work with the entire high voltage project team to ensure that individual specifications, timelines and solutions are met.

Our civil engineering team is responsible for everything from site development to structural design. We have completed some of the most challenging projects in the industry while also delivering the quality and personal attention that our customers have learned to expect. Beta’s civil engineering team designs and builds high voltage projects across the country, specializing in design-build services for gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) projects, switchyards, substations and high voltage transmission lines.

Site Development

Beta’s civil engineers handle site development, which includes all grading, access roads, drainage, and any other site work where the substation will be constructed. Our experience includes blasting and processing of rock to prepare a site for construction, including one project that involved 110 blasting operations. One of our largest projects involved removing 1.8 million cubic yards of earth and rock from a 64-acre site, in addition to designing and constructing more than one mile of paved access road.

Beta also develops and implements stormwater pollution prevention plans (SWPPP) for construction activities and supports customers in obtaining environmental permits.

We use Civil 3D and Vehicle Tracking turning software in addition to other tools to prepare site development plans. Our site development capabilities include:

  • Site development design
  • Drainage, detention/retention/filtration/hydromodification, erosion control, and stormwater control designs
  • Access road design
  • Retaining walls
  • Soil nail walls
  • Soldier pile walls
  • Mechanically stabilized earth walls (MSE)
  • Concrete tie-back walls
  • Fencing
  • Sound walls

Structural Engineering

Our civil engineering team also designs all structural aspects and foundations for high voltage electrical substations and transmission lines. We ensure that designs, and their applications, meet the current editions of industry codes and standards, as well as customer-specific requirements.

Our flexibility means you receive a design tailored to your needs, not a “one size fits all” approach. Drawing on our extensive high voltage design experience, our team can often identify options for foundation and structural designs that result in decreased costs, while maintaining or even improving quality.

Beta has capabilities to perform designs with industry-preferred software, including but not limited to PLS CADD, SAP2000, RISA3D, MFAD, Shaft3D, Foundation3D, and RISA Foundation. We provide complete designs and details for structural components of high voltage projects, including:

  • Rigid and flexible bus design
  • Overhead strain bus and static line designs
  • Equipment and bus support structures
  • Transmission dead end and static support structures
  • Control enclosures
  • Deep and shallow foundations

Licensed to work in all 48 contiguous states, our team of civil, structural and electrical engineers are ready to make your project a success.
