A 69/12kV GIS Substation That's Built To Blend In

When cities grow, so do their power needs and their substations. But that often leaves utilities without much elbow room. On this project, the site extended to within a few feet of pedestrian sidewalks along a busy residential street, meaning curb appeal and safety had to be key considerations throughout the station’s design and construction.

This project involved the replacement of an existing air-insulated 69/4kV substation, which had reached its end of life, with a gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) 69/12kV station. The site had several unique constraints, including being located near an underground water reservoir and a local ballpark.

Small Site Footprint

The limited site footprint presented significant construction challenges. Due to the proximity of homes and high-traffic roadways, Beta performed much of the work during off-hours to reduce noise and traffic impacts on the surrounding community.

Architectural Considerations

One of the utility’s primary goals with this project was to ensure that the new station blended into its environment so it wouldn’t impact residential value for the neighborhood. Beta collaborated closely with the city and the project’s architects throughout the design review process to develop an aesthetically pleasing facility that met both the city's vision and budget requirements. The resulting GIS enclosure was even engineered to support climbing vegetation along the building walls to help the facility integrate seamlessly into the surrounding neighborhood.

The project also included a variety of complex mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems. Beta coordinated with specialty contractors to deliver customer-specified features such as commercial electrical systems, sophisticated HVAC equipment, exposed overhead ductwork, and restroom facilities. Throughout design and construction, Beta maintained close coordination with all stakeholders to ensure quality, constructability, and compliance with project requirements. Beta also pivoted late in the project to accommodate the utility’s request for an enhanced perimeter design, replacing the originally planned fencing with a decorative iron gate and fence. Demonstrating flexibility and responsiveness, Beta developed a custom fence design based on the city's preferred architectural style and worked with contractors to implement the new scope.

The completed substation delivers improved capacity, enhanced reliability, and a significantly reduced footprint while integrating thoughtfully into the surrounding community. The project demonstrates how modern utility infrastructure can coexist with urban environments through innovative design, stakeholder collaboration, and community focus.
