America’s Real-Time Electricity Use Mapped
The U.S. Energy Information Administration has released the first-ever tool to measure nationwide electricity use in near-real time. The site, U.S. Electric System Operating Data, is still in beta and accepting suggestions on how to improve the service. The site provides the previous day’s total, hourly and peak demand as well as forecasted demand, net generation and other measurements for each individual interconnection, or major power grid. The information is updated every 15 minutes and is provided by the different interconnected grid operators. The data can be used online by the financial and electric industries as well as government analysts to spot trends and problem areas and can also be downloaded for more-detailed study and analysis.

PJM Board Approves $636 Million Investment in Transmission Projects
The PJM Interconnection Board authorized more than $636 million in electric transmission projects to strengthen the grid and reduce electricity costs. The approvals include a market efficiency project expected to save customers $622 million over 15 years. The $320 million market efficiency project is expected to alleviate transmission congestion across the Pennsylvania and Maryland border. It involves upgrades at existing substations, two new substations, two new transmission lines and improvements to existing lines. The expected in-service date is 2020.

Alliant Energy Announces $1 Billion Wind Project
Iowans will soon see a significant increase in clean, economical wind generation from Alliant Energy. Alliant Energy's Iowa utility is seeking regulatory approval to expand its Whispering Willow Wind Farm in Franklin County and possibly develop wind energy in other areas of the state. The five-year project will add up to 500 MW of clean energy to economically meet customer needs.

TRC to Support Clean Line Energy’s 700-Mile Transmission Project
TRC Companies Inc., a national engineering, consulting and construction management firm that serves energy and environmental markets, says it has been awarded a $12 million contract by Clean Line Energy to provide land acquisition services, survey permissions and overall project management for the Plains & Eastern Clean Line transmission project. The Plains & Eastern Clean Line, as one of the largest clean energy infrastructure projects in the country, will provide a pathway for 4,000 MW of low-cost wind power to be delivered from Oklahoma to the Mid-South and Southeast.
