Charles White, Beta’s VP of Electrical Engineering, recently participated in the subcommittee meetings for the revision of two IEEE standards. These meetings included extensive open discussion and allowed participants to hear different perspectives on how the guides are being used by utilities and consultants.

One subcommittee is evaluating the IEEE Guide for Breaker Failure Protection of Power Circuit Breakers, which describes methods to protect a power system from faults that are not cleared because of failure of a power circuit breaker to operate or interrupt when called upon by a protective relay.

The second subcommittee is reviewing the most recent revision of the IEEE Guide for Protective Relaying Applications to Transmission Lines, which describes accepted transmission line protection schemes and the different electrical system parameters and situations that affect their application.

There are many goals to be accomplished over the next few years before the new revisions to these standards can be finalized and published. Beta is pleased take part in these important industry initiatives.
