Ross Twidwell, Beta’s VP of Civil Engineering, recently participated in several IEEE meetings for design guide standards 605, 693 and 1527. Beta is pleased to be part of these important industry initiatives.

The IEEE 605 is a guide that covers bus design in air insulated substations. Proper design of substation bus ensures safe and reliable operation of the substation and the power system. The subcommittee meets twice a year to address issues ranging from current corrections to future changes that may need to be made in the design guide to reflect best practices.

The IEEE 693 is a guide that covers the seismic design of substations. Design recommendations include seismic criteria, qualification methods and levels, structural operation, installation methods and documentation. The subcommittee meets twice a year to address review the document to ensure it remains comprehensive, make corrections and evaluate recent events that can impact the document.

The IEEE 1527 is a guide that covers the seismic design of flexible buswork. This subcommittee meets twice a year to continue the development of this fairly new guide based on its current use and how it can be improved.
