Beta provided the engineering, procurement and construction of a 2MW battery energy storage system (BESS) for Glendale Water and Power in 2017. The operation of this small-scale pilot project has proved the battery system’s capability to respond instantly to shifts in the system load.
Beta overcame several challenges during the design and construction of the BESS. To maintain drivable access across the compact project site, Beta reduced the substation footprint by 50%. This was achieved by putting half of the substation on an H-frame structure. Since on-site storage was limited, deliveries had to be perfectly timed for immediate installation.
The project was featured in an article published by T&D World in 2017. With the recent increase in demand for battery systems, these types of projects are receiving more attention. Check out the article here to learn more about the challenges and lessons learned from this project.
