Construction is progressing on a 2 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in Glendale, California. The project is slated to be completed in late March and is located next to the Grandview GIS substation, which Beta completed last year.
The utility will use this small-scale system to gain experience to develop and incorporate a larger scale battery component into its system. The full-scale BESS will support the integration of renewable resources by mitigating the intermittent energy supplied by renewable resources such as photovoltaic and wind.
The BESS can provide the backup power to start the utility’s power plant generators in case of a major system-wide outage, allowing power to be restored to city’s customers more quickly. It will also reduce the city’s dependency on other utilities.
